What Halved does
Halved helps you work through your lessons. When you get stuck, it asks you questions and gives hints to help you think it through.
It will not do your work for you. It will not just give you the answers. It cannot search the internet, and it is not a replacement for your teacher.
What Halved knows about you
Halved uses your school email address to log you in. In most schools it also knows your first name, so it can talk to you properly. Your full name stays with your school. Some schools choose for Halved not to hold your name at all.
Halved knows your year group and which assignments your teacher has set you.
Your school also tells Halved a few things about how you are getting on: your reading level, and whether you are working at the level expected for your age in English and in maths. Halved uses this so that it starts in the right place with you, instead of starting the same way for everyone. It is not a report about you, and it is nothing your teachers do not already know.
As you work, Halved keeps what you write and the conversations you have with it.
You can add a profile photo of yourself to your account if you want to. You do not have to, and Halved works just the same without one.
Before your photo is saved, Halved checks it, the same way it checks everything else. If the check cannot be done, or finds something it is worried about, your photo is not saved at all.
You can change your photo whenever you like. If you want it taken away altogether, ask your school or email dataprivacy@halved.io, and it will be deleted.
How Halved learns about your learning
Halved notices which topics you find easy and which you find hard. It notices which ways of explaining things work best for you. It uses this to help you better.
Halved will also sometimes ask you some questions about how you like to learn, how you like to go about your work, what you are interested in, and whether you find certain things difficult. You choose your answers from a list. There are no right or wrong answers. One of the answers on the difficult question is “None of these”. That is a real answer, not a way of skipping the question. You do not have to answer any of them if you would rather not.
Your teachers can see what you choose. That is the point of asking. It helps them help you. They see exactly what you picked, and nothing is added to it.
Halved also notices what you seem to be interested in from the things you write to it, without asking you. So there are two ways it can learn what you like: you tell it, or it notices. When your teachers look, they are told which one it was.
Halved also keeps the marks your teacher gives you, and it notices when you get questions right or wrong.
Your work and your messages are stored in the UK. When you chat with Halved, the replies are worked out on Microsoft’s computers in Sweden, and Microsoft may keep a copy there for up to 30 days to check the service is not being misused. Sweden is in the European Union, and the UK treats it as a safe place for your information. Your school has agreed to this. If you want to know more, ask your teacher or email dataprivacy@halved.io.
Halved does not track where you are, and does not hold any payment details.
Please do not type personal things into Halved, like your home address or your phone number.
How long you work
Halved records how long you spend working in it, and when.
Your teacher can see this, and so can some other staff at your school. So can you. Your own working time is on your dashboard, and you can look at it whenever you like.
Who can see your information
Your teachers can see your work, your marks, how long you have been working, and the conversations you have with Halved about your work.
Some people who work at Halved can see some of what Halved holds about you, like your account and your conversations with Halved. They cannot see the work you hand in to your teacher. When one of them opens your conversations, a record is kept of who looked and when. They are not your teachers, and they are not at your school. They look so that they can keep Halved working properly and help your school if something goes wrong.
Keeping you safe
Every message you send to Halved is checked automatically. Most of the time nothing happens and you carry on as normal.
If a message suggests you might be at risk, it goes to a member of staff at your school who can help. This is to keep you safe, not to get you into trouble.
There is something about that check you should know. Halved checks best in English. It looks for certain English words and phrases, and it has a second check that can read other languages too. That second check is good at noticing when someone might hurt themselves. It is not good at noticing when somebody else is hurting you. So if you write about someone hurting you, in a language other than English, Halved may not notice. Nobody will be told.
Even in English, Halved can miss things. It is a computer check and not a person reading.
So please do not wait for Halved to notice. If someone is hurting you, or you are frightened, or you do not feel safe, tell an adult you trust at your school. Halved is working to make this better in other languages. This page will say so when it has.
Not everything is checked the moment you write it. Messages you send in chat are checked straight away, unless the checker is not working at that moment; then your message is kept and checked as soon as it is working again, so nothing goes unchecked. When you type your work, it is checked as you go, once you have written a fair amount. Anything you draw or write by hand on a lesson page or in your jotter is checked when you send it to your teacher, and not while you are still working on it. If you type words onto a lesson page or your jotter, those words are checked as you write them, not just when you send your work to your teacher. That is different from drawing, which is checked when you send it. If you ask Halved to read your handwriting, or ask it about the page you are on, it checks that straight away. When you send your work to your teacher, all of it is checked again.
So, if something is worrying you, chat is the fastest way to be heard. You do not have to wait until you send your work.
Halved is here to help you learn. It is not a replacement for a teacher, a friend or your family. If something is worrying you, please talk to an adult you trust.
When this page changes
Halved checks this page every year to make sure it still says what really happens. It was last checked in August 2026, and the next check is due in August 2027. If something important changes before then, Halved will update this page and ask you to read it again.
